LUBBOCK, TX - Texas Tech University celebrated Alcohol Awareness Week a week after the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week due to the school's homecoming being that week. The goal is to raise awareness around the high risk drinking behaviors that are typical around college campuses. The school brings different departments on campus together to host events during the week.
Joseph Pfund is the alcohol and other drug specialist for RISE. RISE at Texas Tech stands for Risk Intervention and Safety Education. Alcohol and drugs is one of their main initiatives.
He said the goal is to raise awareness of safer drinking habits and to let students know the resources available on campus. Pfund said sex relates highly to alcohol because it can result in sexual actions. He said 90 percent of the time, any reports that come into the office will include alcohol and sex together.
Kelsey Jackson, the coordinator for Student Activies Board, said it is a good opportunity to provide education on alcohol and how it could affect more than yourself.
During the week, students were encouraged to learn where the blue light emergency phones are around campus. It is a direct line to the Texas Tech Police Department to report an emergency.
College students drinking is enviable, but the week was to show how to drink responsibility and the outcomes alcohol can have.
