LUBBOCK, TX – On November 9, 2017, ten students got to showcase their talent in the Red Raider Showcase hosted by the Student Activities Board in the Allen Theatre at Texas Tech University. The first place winner receives free textbooks, courtesy of Barnes and Noble, for the rest of their undergraduate career, while the second place winner receives free textbooks for the spring semester following the talent show. Ester Garza, the nightlife coordinator for SAB, was in charge of hosting Red Raider Showcase. She said they changed a lot from the previous years they hosted the event and that she saw a better turnout. Garza said that the show was a huge success, in her opinion, and that she only sees the show growing from here into something bigger and bigger. Gage Brockman, a freshman architecture major, was the winner of the show this year. He played Piano Man by Billy Joel. As a freshman, winning free textbooks for the rest of his undergraduate career will save him and his family a lot of money. He said he is deeply thankful for the opportunity to participate in the show and the results he had. His whole family came into town from Sweetwater, Texas, and his friends in Saddle Tramps came, as well. He said hearing their voices in the crowd screaming and cheering brought him so much happiness and made him more relaxed on stage.
